The bills of the October 19, 1776 South Carolina issue were printed on thick brown paper, exchangeable for Spanish milled dollars. The reverse of this $4 note was printed with type set and the front with engraved plates. An emblem featuring an elephant encircled my the latin motto “INFESTUS TANTUM INFESTIS” (Hostile only to the hostile) can be seen on the front.
