The bills of the October 19, 1776 South Carolina issue were printed on thick brown paper, exchangeable for Spanish milled dollars. The reverse of this $4 note was printed with type set and the front with engraved plates. An emblem featuring a drum and flags encircled my the latin motto “TUTA PEDAMINE VIRTUS” (Honor safe in its support) can be seen on the front. Incredibly scarce, out of the 2,500 originally printed, only 18 are known to exist today. Fantastic eye appeal for the grade on this problem free note, well deserving of the gold sticker from GCC.
