This late South Carolina note was issued by the City of Charleston for the purpose of replacing previously worn-out city issues. Only 4,525 pounds sterling were printed in this issue, including 12,000 1 Shilling/3 Pence notes such as this one. This gorgeous high grade example has bold ink and an elaborate design featuring tobacco leaves and a coil of hemp rope. Interestingly, the word treasury is misspelled “TREASUSY” likely as an anti-counterfeiting measure. A nice addition for any collection.
