This large size (approximately 9” x 5.5”) 1779 Massachusetts note is a Pine Tree-vignetted bond type used to support the State Lottery funding. Printed by Nathaniel Hurd on laid paper. Interestingly, the pine tree is encircled by a rattlesnake eating its own tail. The top of the note features a grand gothic title. The bottom states “DEATH TO COUNTERFEIT THIS”. This note is serial numbered 1391 and issued 15 pounds on June 1, 1779. Signed by two committee members and the treasurer. Minor ink burn on the 15 Pounds.
