The October 7, 1776 Virginia issue features intricate borders that have the denomination of the note embedded within. These borders were engraved by Robert Scot. The Virginia state arms can be seen at the left with the motto “SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS” (Ever thus to tyrants”. Higher denominations such as this $15 have an intentional misspelling in this motto “TYRANNUS”, likely to deter counterfeiting. Printed by Alexander Purdie on thick rag paper containing mica flake and blue thread. Affordable 1776 Virginia example.
