The May 4, 1778 Virginia notes with printed dates, such as this one, had newly engraved border cuts and state insignia compared to the May 4, 1778 hand written date issue. Beneath the bold state insignia is the Latin motto “SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS” (Ever thus to tyrants). This note was printed on course paper by A. Purdie or Clarkson & Davis. Incredibly scarce, only 13 examples of this thick papered $15 note are known to survive today. Very rich ink on the reverse faces up well for the grade.
