The James River Bank was a private bank, created to counteract immense counterfeiting of Virginia Treasury notes. The Crown disapproved of this private bank, but it was passed by the Virginia Assembly. Interestingly, this September 1, 1775 issue repurposed extra paper from the original April 1, 1773 James River Bank issue. This was because paper for large and small was exhausted from the July 17, 1775 issue. This desirable large size note features a vignette of a beautiful sailing ship on the upper left along with many hand written components throughout. Nice legibility remains for the grade. Incredibly scarce note, of the 19,974 originally printed, only 26 are known to survive today.
